Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. Her father was a carnival barker, passed away as a young little girl. This forced her mother to provide for her family through work as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. But she quit school in the span of two years of school to take on a acting career. It was a difficult path to follow. Even though she got an interview in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs came her way. While in New York, she volunteered in a bar as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. She earned money by working during the day as an usherette. She studied drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
